Every day, there is a new story about tariffs, our economy, our status as an independent nation, and our culture as Canadians and as Windsorites. It is asking us to find our grit and stand up for who we are.
And Windsor, Ontario, is standing in the front row. If we are to be resilient in the face of this, what are we resilient for? Our jobs? Or something greater?
Windsor’s regional identity is not only as automakers. It has been shaped by First Peoples, who named the strips of land around both sides of the Detroit River, Waawiiatanong. We have been and still are explorers, harvesters, builders and creators.
Unlike most medium-sized cities in Canada, Windsor also has a shared identity with our neighbours. The ancient partnership between Windsor and Detroit has driven our culture’s shared language, fahrenheit, and family. Windsor is not just risking our economy in the present moment. Windsor is risking our entire identity.
