Dealing with Blue Monday can include WSO concerts

Windsor, ON – The Windsor Symphony Orchestra (WSO) in partnership with the Essex County Medical Society, are pleased to offer a new Social Prescription initiative for patients feeling sad, lonely or in social isolation.

The third Monday in January has been deemed Blue Monday. In Canada, this rings true; daylight is at a premium, nights are long and cold, and holiday bills are arriving.

Social Prescription emphasizes the partnership between heath care professionals and community support by co-creating solutions based on patient’s needs. This program will allow Family Doctors in Windsor and Essex County to prescribe free WSO concert tickets as part of their overall plan to improve the patient’s well-being.

“Social prescribing reflects a recognition that loneliness affects out health, and we have a universal need to connect to one another.” Vivek H. Murthy (2020), former US Surgeon General and Author of Together: The healing power of human connection in a sometimes-lonely world.

How does it work?

  • A family physician prescribes the Social Prescription to patients they feel would benefit from attending a symphony performance
  • Patients receive the prescription along with an instruction sheet
  • Patients redeem tickets by calling the WSO Box Office

The WSO hopes this partnership will help support the emotional and social well-being of members of our community while connecting them with meaningful cultural experiences.
