What’s something interesting about this concert?

  • Albinoni’s Sinfonia in C Major was well-known in its time, however, many of his works fell into obscurity after his death.
  • Vivaldi worked primarily in Venice, and for much of his life, he relied on his position as a violin teacher and music director at the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage for girls where he composed many of his concertos. In his later years, his works fell out of favour, and he faced financial difficulties. It wasn’t until the 20th century that his music was rediscovered and gained the massive popularity it holds today.
  • Torelli spent much of his career in Bologna, working primarily as a teacher, violinist, and composer at the prestigious Bologna Conservatory. His work was mostly heard in local churches and played by small orchestras and ensembles. His compositions laid the foundation for the development of violin concertos, and he is now recognized as one of the key figures in the early Baroque violin tradition.
  • Scarlatti was born in Naples, Italy, and spent much of his life working in Italy and later in Rome, where he wrote many of his operas and orchestral works.
