The folk songs composed by Holst, Janáček, and Bartók reflect a deep connection to their cultural roots. Holst’s British folk tunes, Janáček’s Moravian themes, and Bartók’s Romanian rhythms create a rich soundscape of musical storytelling.

Robert Franz, conductor

PROGRAM
HOLST: Brook Green Suite
JANÁCEK: Suite for String Orchestra
BARTÓK: Rumanian Folk Dances

What’s something interesting about this concert?

  • Holst’s Brook Green Suite is often praised for its lyrical, serene quality, making it one of Holst’s most beloved pieces among string musicians and audiences alike.
  • Janáček composed the Suite for Strings in 1923 when he was in his seventies and had already established himself as one of the leading composers in Czech music.
  • Bartók’s The Romanian Folk Dances was originally composed for piano in 1915. The piano version was later orchestrated by Bartók in 1917, further enriching the musical textures and colors of the piece.

This concert is 60 minutes. No intermission.
