Andrea Yun Marttila
Cello
Andrea Yun Marttila is currently the principal cellist of the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra. In the past, she has served as principal of the Flint Symphony and Laredo Philharmonic. She has served on the faculties of the University of Texas at San Antonio and Bowling Green State University. Andrea has performed at the Banff Centre for the Arts’ Chamber Music Residency, Aspen Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival, and the Scotia Festival of Music. She has earned degrees in music education, mathematics, and cello performance from Indiana University and the University of Michigan. Andrea is the orchestra director at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor.
Shawn Mativetsky
Tabla
Versatile percussionist Shawn Mativetsky performs in a variety of musical genres with dynamism and skill. Equally at home in Western classical and contemporary/new music, Indian classical music, and world music, Shawn also composes and performs music for dance and theatre. He is active in the promotion of the tabla and North Indian classical music through lectures, workshops, and performances across Canada and the United States. Based in Montreal, Shawn teaches tabla and percussion, both privately and at McGill University, where he directs the McGill Tabla Ensemble.
As an ensemble musician, Shawn Mativetsky’s wide range is evident in his work with three very different groups: the contemporary music ensemble Quintette Mont-Royal, violinist Parmela Attariwala’s cross-cultural Attar Project, and the Indian-folk group Galitcha. Shawn has given acclaimed solo performances at the Banaras Hindu University (India), the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, and the Société des Arts Technologiques.
Shawn’s work as composer and percussionist in Geordie Theatre’s productions of Brahm and the Angel (2005) and Hansel and Gretel (2003) was met with critical acclaim. In 2003, he performed in Théâtre du Rideau Vert’s highly successful production of Paulo Coelho’s L’Alchimiste and was musical director and performer in Ensemble Mahapooram’s Le Lion du Panjshir and Danse Kalashas / Usine C’s dance production, En Himalaya. In 2006, he collaborated with the dancer Manijeh Ali, composing music for her solo dance choreography, Spirit of the Mountain.
Shawn has also performed with Ramasutra, Matter of Time, Ensemble Mahapooram, Ragleela, Lithium Ensemble, the Montreal Organ Consort, and Duo Sheppard-Lanza, as well as with a number of symphony orchestras in Canada. In 2000, his recording with Ramasutra won an ADISQ Felix award, and was nominated for a Juno.
Shawn Mativetsky is a ganda-band disciple of Pandit Sharda Sahai of the Benares tabla gharana and has also studied tabla with Bob Becker. In addition, he has studied Western classical percussion with Pierre Béluse, D’Arcy Gray, Andrei Malashenko, and Robert Slapcoff, and the percussion of Kathakali dance-theatre with Bruno Paquet. Shawn holds a Master’s degree in music from McGill University and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
Nicholas Papador is currently a member of the music faculty at the University of Windsor, where he coordinates the Percussion Studio and directs the University of Windsor Percussion Ensemble as well as teaches courses in Percussion Techniques, Music Theory. Papador previously served as a Visiting Scholar at Cornell University where he worked in the Department of Music as well as the Department of Theatre, Film and Dance.
Papador completed his doctoral degree from Northwestern University and his master’s degree at the world-renowned Indiana University School of Music where his efforts earned him the university’s coveted Performer’s Certificate. He also holds two bachelors degrees from the University of Oregon. His principal teachers have included Michael Burritt, Gerald Carlyss, James Ross, Ruben Alvarez, Charles Dowd and Paul Wertico.
Papador performs regularly as an orchestral percussionist and timpanist with numerous orchestras and has recorded on the Ludwig/Elf and RIAX labels. Recent appointments include the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. He has played under numerous conductors of note including Stephen Alltop, David Bowden, Carmen DeLeone, David Effron, Frederick Fennell, Timothy Hankewich, William McLaughlin, Nicholas Palmer, John Morris Russell, Rico Saccani, Joel Sachs, Alfred Savia and Victor Yampolsky.
Also an active composer, Papador’s works are published by Alfred/Warner Brothers Music, KP3/Studio 4 Music, House Panther Press and Matrix Publishing. His marimba work Autumn Portrait is now performed in recitals nationwide by collegiate marimbists and is a recommended state high school competition piece throughout the United States.
Trevor Pittman
Clarinet
Born and raised in Lethbridge, Trevor studied clarinet at the University of Lethbridge with Margaret Mezei. He graduated in 1997 with a bachelor of music and the School of Fine Arts Gold Medal. Trevor then received a Fulbright scholarship to pursue his master’s at Eastern Michigan University, where he studied with Dr. Kimberly Cole. He completed his program in 1999, and taught theory and literature as a Lecturer until 2004.
Trevor has been principal clarinet of the Plymouth Symphony, Canton Chamber Orchestra, Dearborn Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra. He has played with many orchestras throughout Windsor and Michigan and has made several solo appearances in both the United States and Canada.
Trevor now lives in Windsor, Ontario, where he has taught clarinet and theory for the University of Windsor. In the spring of 2005, Trevor received the Bruce Benward International Award for Outstanding Young Theory Instructor from the MACRO music theory organization. Trevor currently works as the Concert Producer/Operations Manager for the School of Music at the University of Windsor.
Jaimie Wagner
Flute
Jaimie Wagner decided to become a professional flute player at the age of 12 when she was invited to go on tour with James Galway and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performing John Corigliano’s Pied Piper Fantasy. She received her bachelor of music in flute performance from Ithaca College, NY, in 1998 and her master of music degree from the University of Michigan in 2000. Her teachers include Jeffery Zook, Sharon Sparrow, Mark Sparks, Claudia Anderson, and Wendy Mehne. She has performed in master classes for many celebrated flutists including James Galway, Trevor Wye, Julius Baker, and William Bennett.
Ms. Wagner performed as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 1994 and in 1997 performed in many venues throughout Europe including the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. She was a finalist in the Frank Bowen Competition in Albuquerque, NM in 2000 and was an associate member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in 2002. Ms. Wagner is now a freelance musician in the Detroit area and is on the substitute list for several local orchestras including the Michigan Opera Theatre. She has performed with the Fischer Theatre Orchestra in Detroit, the Detroit Chamber Winds, and performs on the newly recorded series of “The Unrecorded Music of Paul Paray” with the Assumption Grotto Church. She is a highly sought-after teacher and her students have been accepted at prestigious music schools such as the New England Conservatory of Music, McGill University, and the University of Michigan. During the summers, she teaches at Signature Music Camp in New York and is the assistant teacher at Jeffery Zook’s Applewood Flute Retreat on the Bruce Peninsula. Ms. Wagner currently teaches at Hillsdale College and at the University of Windsor.
