Intact Insurance Elementary School Programs

Arts education for our students is a vital part of creating better citizens. The WSO is committed to the Windsor/Essex community and its students, bringing live orchestral music into schools and bringing students into the beautiful Capitol Theatre. With the generous support of our sponsors and using the Ontario Curriculum, we have created educational programs to touch the lives of those eager to learn more and those who not yet have had an opportunity to experience the power and energy of live orchestral music.

Concerts for Grades JK - 3: Language and Music

The WSO's 19-piece chamber orchestra is ready to travel to you!  Led by WSO Associate Conductor Peter Wiebe and available in both official languages, 19 string, brass, and woodwind players will come to your school and perform two 45-minute concerts in your gymnasium, cafetorium, or library.  No permission slips, no bus required!  Your students will explore the connections between language and music focusing on spelling, poetry, story-telling, sentences, and accents.

Audience: These concerts are developed specifically for students in Grades JK-3.

Equipment: Each school will be required to provide 19 armless, straight-backed chairs (i.e., folding chairs) - this keeps our cost to schools as low as possible!  The WSO will bring music stands.  A WSO representative will arrive on-site 1.5 hours before your concert start time in order to set up the space.

Language: Nos concerts sont disponsibles en anglais ou en français

Cost: The cost per school is $650 including HST.  We are happy to work with you to find a price that works with your budget!  Early booking rate of $500 including HST in place until October 1, 2017!

Schedule: Start times are flexible, though we cannot begin before 9:30am.  Both concerts must be completed within two hours and a break of 20 minutes minimum must be scheduled between the two concerts.  (For example: Concert 1 - 9:30am-10:15am; Break - 10:15am-10:45am; Concert 2 - 10:45am-11:30am)

Concerts for Grades 7 - 12: Music from the New World

This concert will take a detailed look at Dvorak's New World Symphony.  Featuring the full orchestra, we'll explore the melodies Dvorak used as well as his composition and instrumentation techniques. We have spent the past three seasons exploring the wind, brass and percussion instruments of the orchestra - this concert will build on that knowledge as the full orchestra takes the Capitol stage with Maestro Franz.  There will be plenty of opportunities to ask the musicians questions!

About WSO Education Events

All WSO Education initiatives are made possible by the support of our sponsors, Intact Insurance and TD Canada Trust.  The cost of delivering our programs are substantial and funding from outside sources only covers a portion of our costs.  All fees charged to schools go directly to defraying WSO Education costs.

Each year the Windsor Symphony Orchestra creates three different education concerts using the Ontario Curriculum in both official languages as well as other events for students, such as our Maestro Visits and Side by Side Workshops. What you need to know about WSO Education events:

  • Each event is designed to help teach the Ontario music curriculum with cross-curricular connections to other subjects

  • We want to make sure that your school group is able to participate in any of our education events during the school year.  Please talk to us about your budget needs!

  • The number of musicians onstage ranges from 1 (our Music Director at Maestro Visits) to 50+ (full orchestra concerts for Grades 4-6), enabling students to hear the excitement of musicians performing together en masse as well as more focussed listening for smaller ensembles

  • All of our events emphasize audience etiquette as well as active listening skills

  • Three different concert programs are presented each season: one designed for Grades K-3, one for Grades 4-6, and one for Grades 7-12. Programming rotates, so no student will hear the same concert twice.

  • The concerts for Grades 4-12 are field trips so permission forms and busses are required. We come to you for Grades JK-3!

  • Free resource guides for Grades 4-6 provides teachers with lesson plans, in-depth materials, online resources and curriculum ideas and connections in both official languages.

  • We view ourselves as a community resource!  Feel free to be in touch anytime with questions, concerns, or feedback about any of our programs, as well as for ideas on integrating music into your classroom.  Email or call, 519-973-1238 x 18

Some rave reviews from schools who have attended our Education Concert Series:

  • "Fantastique! Merci d'avoir présenté en français. C'est bien que les élèves puissent voir un spectacle en français dans leur communauté."

  • "The musical education would benefit the students twice a year, even three!! Awesome! Thanks a million."

  • "[The resource guides] were extremely helpful to teach the curriculum as well as prepare students for the concert."
