S1E9: WSO Music Director Robert Franz concludes the 250th anniversary celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven with three works that show the composer’s versatility and his genius. Symphony No. 8 is described by BBC Music Magazine, as “the most misunderstood of the symphonies… playing games with the listener’s expectations.” Beethoven’s Gratulations Minuet and Coriolan Overture are works teeming with elegance, conflict, and resolution. This program best illustrates Beethoven’s own words on the creative life: “The true artist is not proud: he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal, and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun.”
