The ING Insurance Education Concert Series

Each year the WSO serves over 22,000 students in Windsor, Essex County and Sarnia with its award-winning Education Concerts and Music Alive ensemble performances. This year, students’ eyes and ears will be opened in concerts geared for three age groups performed from February through April.

Big Bad Brass Bash, for grades K-3, features the instruments of the brass family, and is both interdisciplinary (we cover history, science, physics, language arts, and mathematics), and great fun too! This cross-curricular programme features the music of Copland, Mozart, Haydn, Ravel and Debussy, but it’s not all as serious as it sounds. Come and listen; you might find out what John Morris Russell can do with a length of garden hose, a funnel and a mouthpiece…it’s Hose-a-phone time!

H2O, for students in grades 4-6, explores the many ways water is portrayed in music. We will look at the three physical states of water (solid, liquid and vapour) in the music of Vivaldi, Beethoven and Debussy, and cover geography—from rivers to oceans—with the music of Smetana, Debussy and our own Brent Lee. We’ll celebrate water with Respighi’s Fountains of Rome, and Handel’s Water Music in which students are invited to perform on recorders along with the WSO. Rehearsal CD’s and music are provided, so kids can start practicing now!

Music, Film and Games, for grades 7-12, delves into the relationship between sound, image and emotion. Windsor-born film and video game composer Michael Plowman will be our host as the WSO performs music from his motion pictures and animated serials with the images projected on a huge screen above the orchestra. The concert also includes cinematic masterpieces of John Williams and great classical works used in film. It’s a blockbuster musical event that can’t be missed!
